Explanation of Grid Levels in the Power Grid
The power grid in Germany is divided into seven grid levels, each characterized by different voltage levels and functions. This structure enables the efficient transmission and distribution of electrical energy from the generator to the end consumer.
Grid Level 1
The extra-high-voltage grid transports large amounts of energy over long distances and connects power plants to regional distribution grids. It forms the backbone of the electricity supply and enables international electricity trade.
Grid Level 2
At this level, the voltage is stepped down from 380/220 kV to 110 kV to prepare the electricity for the high-voltage grid.
Grid Level 3
The high-voltage grid distributes electricity regionally and supplies large consumers as well as substations, which further transform the electricity to the medium-voltage level.
Grid Level 4
Here, the voltage is reduced from 110 kV to 10–35 kV to provide electricity for regional distribution at the medium-voltage level.
Grid Level 5
The medium-voltage grid supplies cities, municipalities, and large industrial facilities. It serves as the link between the high-voltage grid and the low-voltage level.
Grid Level 6
At this level, the voltage is reduced to 400/230 V to supply power to end users.
Grid Level 7
The low-voltage grid delivers electricity directly to households, small businesses, and other end users.
