Grid Level 6 Explained

Grid Level 6 (NE6) is a central component of the power grid and is used to transform electrical energy from the medium-voltage level (10–36 kV) to the low-voltage level (230/400 V). This voltage transformation takes place in substations, which supply electricity to households, small businesses, and other end users.

Function and Importance of Grid Level 6

At Grid Level 6, the electrical energy that has been transmitted via the medium-voltage grid is transformed to a voltage level suitable for end users. This transformation is crucial for ensuring a safe and efficient power supply in cities, towns, and rural areas. The substations at this level are equipped with high-capacity transformers that enable reliable voltage conversion.

Technical Equipment and Operation

The NE6 substations feature:

  • Medium-voltage switchgear: This controls and protects the flow of electricity at the medium-voltage level.
  • Transformers: They convert the voltage from 10–36 kV to 230/400 V.
  • Low-voltage distribution systems: These distribute power to the individual feeders serving end users.

The operation of these substations requires precise coordination to ensure a stable power supply.
