Why Is Charging Infrastructure Crucial for Germany?
Electric mobility is a central pillar of the energy transition. However, without a nationwide charging infrastructure, the transition to electric vehicles remains a challenge for many in Germany. In many places—both in urban areas and rural regions—there is a lack of suitable charging stations. A smart, well-planned charging infrastructure is therefore crucial for decarbonizing the mobility sector and actively shaping this transition.
The nationwide expansion of the charging infrastructure is thus not only a prerequisite for a growing number of electric vehicles, but also a key lever for achieving climate goals in the transportation sector.
What is the current situation in Germany?
The expansion of the charging infrastructure in Germany is making progress, though the pace varies by region. According to the Federal Network Agency, as of February 1, 2025, there were a total of 125,408 publicly accessible standard charging points and 36,278 fast-charging points. As a result, the number of charging points is growing steadily—in 2024 alone, tens of thousands of new stations were put into operation.
It is particularly noteworthy that fast-charging infrastructure is increasingly being established along highways, federal roads, and in urban centers, while many rural regions of Germany still have a significant amount of catching up to do. Charging capacity also varies—not every charging point allows for fast charging within a short time. This is a key lever for the future expansion strategy, which focuses not only on the quantity but also on the quality of charging points.
The federal government aims to provide at least 1 million publicly accessible charging points by 2030 to meet the needs of the growing fleet of electric vehicles. However, current projections show that the expansion must be significantly accelerated to achieve this goal while avoiding gaps in coverage.
