Grid Level 3 Explained
Grid Level 3 (NE3) comprises the high-voltage grid with a typical voltage of 110 kV. It forms the connection between the supraregional extra-high-voltage grid (NE1) and the regional medium-voltage grids (NE5). At this level, electrical energy is distributed to cities, large industrial facilities, and substations, which further transform the electricity.
Function and Importance of Grid Level 3
The NE3 high-voltage grid is used for the large-scale distribution of electricity. It transports electrical energy from the substations at the extra-high-voltage level to the regional distribution grids. In addition, electricity from medium-sized power plants and renewable energy sources such as wind and solar farms is fed into the grid at this level. Large industrial facilities and Deutsche Bahn also draw their electricity directly from the 110-kV grid.
