FTTC (Fiber to the Curb) Explained
FTTC (Fiber to the Curb) refers to a broadband technology in which fiber-optic cables are laid up to a distribution box near the end user. The remaining distance to the building is bridged using existing copper lines, typically via VDSL2 technology. This hybrid solution combines the advantages of fiber-optic technology with the existing copper infrastructure, thereby enabling higher speeds than conventional DSL.
Advantages of FTTC
- Cost-effectiveness: By utilizing existing copper lines, there is no need for extensive civil engineering work all the way into the building, which reduces deployment costs.

- Technological limitations: The maximum achievable speed is limited by the physical properties of the copper lines.
FTTC vs. FTTH
While FTTC represents a viable interim solution, FTTH (Fiber to the Home) provides an end-to-end fiber-optic connection all the way to the end user’s home. This not only enables higher and more stable speeds but also better scalability for future requirements. FTTC, on the other hand, uses the existing copper infrastructure, which is more cost-effective but less capable in the long term.
