FTTB (Fiber to the Building) Explained
FTTB (Fiber to the Building) refers to a broadband technology in which fiber-optic cables are laid all the way into the building, for example, to the basement. Inside the building, the signal is routed to the individual residential units via existing copper lines or Ethernet cables. This solution offers higher speeds than traditional DSL connections and is particularly well-suited for apartment buildings and commercial properties.
Advantages of FTTB
- Higher bandwidths: The fiber-optic connection extending into the building enables significantly higher data transfer rates than those achievable with copper lines alone.
- Cost-effectiveness: Utilizing existing in-building cabling reduces installation effort and costs compared to FTTH (Fiber to the Home).
- Faster deployment: FTTB can be implemented more quickly, as no extensive work is required inside the apartments.
Challenges and Limitations
- Dependence on existing cabling: The quality and length of the existing copper lines affect the achievable speed and stability of the connection.
- Limited future-proofing: Compared to FTTH, FTTB is less future-proof, as the copper component is a limiting factor for higher bandwidths in the long term.
FTTB vs. FTTH
While FTTB brings fiber-optic cable into the building and bridges the last leg via copper lines, FTTH runs the fiber-optic cable directly into the end user’s home. FTTH thus offers the highest available bandwidths and is the more future-proof solution in the long term. FTTB, on the other hand, represents a practical compromise, especially in buildings where full fiber-optic cabling cannot be implemented immediately.
