Smart Metering – Intelligent Metering Systems for the Energy Transition
Smart metering refers to the use of intelligent metering systems (iMSys) for the precise collection and transmission of energy consumption data. These digital electricity meters enable transparent consumption analysis and are a key component in the digitalization of the energy transition.
What Is a Smart Meter?
A smart meter consists of a modern metering device (mME) and a communication module, the smart meter gateway (SMGW). While the mME digitally measures energy consumption, the SMGW ensures the secure transmission of data to grid operators and energy suppliers. This eliminates the need for manual meter readings, and consumers gain detailed insights into their electricity consumption.
Advantages of Smart Metering
- Transparency: Real-time information about one’s own energy consumption helps identify potential savings.
- Efficiency: Automated data transmission simplifies billing and enables the use of variable rates.
- Grid stability: Precise collection of consumption data enables grid operators to better manage peak loads and optimize the integration of renewable energy.
Legal Framework in Germany
As of January 2025, the installation of smart meters is mandatory for households with an annual electricity consumption exceeding 6,000 kWh. Operators of photovoltaic systems with an installed capacity of more than 7 kW are also required to install them. The goal is to achieve nationwide coverage with smart metering systems by 2032.
Data Protection and Security
Consumption data is transmitted in encrypted form via the smart meter gateway. Access to the data is restricted exclusively to authorized entities such as grid operators and energy suppliers, and strict data protection regulations apply.
